Hey everyone and happy 21st of December,
I feel like December has gone by so quickly and it makes me sad to think that the build up to Christmas is almost over but I am so excited that it is almost Christmas Day as well. I wanted to write about this years Christmas cake design and I know I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago about my past Christmas cake designs and I said I would probably just put a picture up on Twitter and Instagram but I decided to write a whole post on it.
Last year I was inspired by my favourite Christmas film Elf and it was a two tiered cake which I saw online on a bakery website and I took inspiration from their cake as well. That was so complicated and I had lots of different coloured icing and this year I wanted to go more simple and just stick to white icing for everything and I got a lot of different types of edible glitter in white to apply to the icing to make it really pretty. I am always inspired by a cake and this year I was inspired by the Marks and Spencer cake which I thought was absolutely stunning. I actually decorated it with my Mum because she is so creative and she loves to help me decorate it as well. She really liked this cake and I'm really impressed with how it turned out in the end because I was worried it would look really boring, especially in comparison to last year's cake design.
I really like the effect of the all white design and I think it looks really festive and makes me feel like Christmas. I decided to make icing icicles to go round the whole edge like the Christmas cake design in Marks and Spencer had as well and then covered them in edible glitter so they would catch the light when served. These took forever to make and we had to have a lot of patience to make sure that they were not all the same height but they were still taller than the cake itself. Then in the middle we made bauble which were quite difficult to make because it was hard to make a pattern in them. I once again used edible glitter on some of them and I really like the way that they all turned out and I tried to make some of the baubles look like some of the decorations that we have on our tree. Also in the middle we have a few snowflakes and stars which I cut out with some cookie cutters and icing cutters that I got from Lakeland for the mince pies and I got the snowflake cutters last year in Lakeland as well. I then added some snow like glitter around the cake to make it look like it snowed and I just love the way that this cake turned out.
It looks really simple and in the end it only took a couple of hours to complete which is quite impressive. It took so long because we had to keep washing our hands on a regular basis to make sure that the icing wouldn't change colour because even touching a cup could transfer colour to the icing which I didn't want. I think this cake is so pretty and I love the simplicity of it, and once we figured out how we were going to lay it all out it didn't take too long to finish.
I hope you liked this blog post about this year's Christmas cake and I hope you are all looking forward to Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
